Elpida Memory Inc, the world's fifth-largest maker of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips, said it has yet to make a decision on the construction of a new DRAM plant in Taiwan.
'We are reviewing some likely candidates at home and abroad on the location for our new production site, but no decision has been made,' the company said in a statement. The Asahi newspaper reported, without citing sources, that Elpida is considering building a new DRAM factory in Taiwan, because of some preferential measures offered by Taiwan, including a corporate tax holiday. The paper also said Elpida will probably spend 500 bln yen to construct the new plant and may set up a joint venture with a local partner to run it. The planned factory will have advanced process technologies at 70 nanometers, compared to the current 90 nanometers, with monthly output of 100,000 300-millimeter wafers, the report said. http://http://www.forbes.com/technology/feeds/afx/2006/07/20/afx2891814.html
