Intel, Micron to build joint Singapore facility

East Bay Business Times - November 6, 2006

Intel Corp. and Micron Technology Inc. announced plans Monday for a joint venture in Singapore to make flash memory chips.

This will be the fourth manufacturing facility to be jointly run by Santa Clara-based Intel (NASDAQ: INTC), the world's largest manufacturer of computer chips, and Boise, Idaho-based Micron (NYSE:MU).

Financial details were not disclosed, but the new venture was described as a "multibillion-dollar plant" in a press release by the companies.

In 2005 the companies formed IM Flash Technologies LLC to make NAND flash memory chips. At the time, each company said it would contribute $1.2 billion to the new venture.

Construction of the facility is planned to begin in the first half of 2007, with production expected in the second half of 2008.

The companies said they will be able to produce more chips per wafer of silicon through technology that etches circuits 50 nanometers wide, about 1,000 times smaller than a red blood cell.

Micron acquired flash memory card maker Lexar Media, of Fremont, in June.
